A split-flap display, or flap display, shows a letter or a digit by rotating a stack of small hinged tiles until the right character faces you. Each change makes the tiles clatter against one another, and that dry sound stayed in the memory of everyone who waited for a train or a plane before screens took over. It is a fully mechanical display: no pixel, no backlight, just printed flaps turning in front of you.
I build Nixie-tube dashboards, not station boards. But the day I wanted to show a word next to a number, without a screen, the flap mechanism was the obvious answer. So I dug into it, and here is what I learned.
Solari di Udine and the golden age of stations
The modern split-flap owes a lot to an Italian company, Solari di Udine, which popularised flap displays in stations and airports from the late 1950s. The principle already existed for clocks, but Solari turned it into a mass information system: whole boards where destinations, times and platforms scrolled by. The designer Gino Valle worked on these units, which later entered design collections.
For three decades, these boards set the rhythm of concourses around the world. A traveller looked up, heard the wave of clatter roll from line to line, and read their platform. The object was industrial, yet it had a presence no one had engineered for: it moved, it sounded, it drew the eye without any glowing screen.
How a flap module works
Each display position is a small drum. Around the drum are tiles, each carrying the top half of one character on one face and the bottom half of the next character on the other. A motor turns the drum, and a sensor reads the position to stop exactly on the right character. As the drum turns, the flaps fall one by one and the clatter is born from their landing.
The number of flaps decides what the module can show. A counter only needs the ten digits. A message board needs letters, a space and a few symbols. On our modules, the drum carries thirty positions: the twenty-six letters, the space, and the euro, percent and dot symbols. No digits, because at our workshop the digits are the job of the Nixie tubes.
Why the split-flap nearly disappeared
The same story as Nixie tubes, give or take a few years. From the 1990s, LED and then LCD screens replaced flap boards in stations. It was simpler: no moving part, no motor to service, an instant update from a plain electrical signal. Solari boards were dismantled one by one. Many ended up scrapped, a few in museums, and the clatter left the concourses.
Then, as often happens, disappearance created desire. Enthusiasts recovered old modules, makers rebuilt them, and a handful of companies brought the split-flap back for the home and the office. The flap display became an object you choose, no longer out of technical necessity, but for how it makes you feel.
What a flap does that a screen does not
A screen shows a word instantly and silently. The split-flap takes a second to compose the word, flap after flap, with its clatter. That slowness is exactly the point. The change becomes a small event. You look up because you heard something move, not because a notification blinked.
There is also the material. A flap is a physical, printed object that ages, that can be replaced. It has no sleep mode, no brightness to set, no interface. Placed in a room, it does not look like yet another screen: it looks like an instrument.
At Nixie Pulse: the flap for the word, the tube for the number

The flaps show the label of the metric, spelled out in full: MRR, ABO YT, VENTES. You read at a glance what the device counts and how much, without a screen or a printed sticker.
